I created this piece as a sample for my Beginning Metalsmithing students for their “Memory Box” assignment, where they had to reproduce a personally meaningful object in copper and/or brass as a functional container.  It’s always a good idea for a teacher to complete their own assignments, both to make samples but also to understand better what is being asked of the students. For my piece, I chose my childhood R2D2 action figure (which I still have). It was a great experience and I’m thrilled to have my own little copper R2D2 now..
